Guides for Families

Simple guides to help you support your child's speech and language development.

Your child will wear a small vest with a pocket. Inside the pocket goes a tiny device called LENA — it counts how much language your child hears and uses throughout the day.

How to Record

  1. 1

    Press the Power button

  2. 2

    Press the Record button

  3. 3

Put the device in the vest pocket, snap it closed, and put the vest on your child

  4. 4

That's it — leave it alone. It turns off by itself after 16 hours.

Take the vest off when:

  • Your child goes in water (bath, pool, etc.)
  • Your child goes to bed for the night

Keep the vest nearby so you can put it back on in the morning!

Skip recording days when:

  • Your child is sick in bed
  • Your child is at daycare, school, or a party for most of the day
  • Your child is outside playing sports for most of the day

Any normal day at home is a great day to record.
